I have had one experience fighting a pit bull, and I lost.
I could here a little boy crying ouside my home one morning. I looked out, and a pit bull was drgging his dog by the throat down the road. I had no idea what was coming, or I would have brought a gun. I picked up an old pole from the ditch, and I swung that thing as hard as I could, hitting him right on the dam shoulders. He didn't budge, but looked like he may decide to take me on. I backed off, and went for my rifle. As I came out, his owner had that dog by the collar and was shaking him like crazy to get him to let go,, there were no words needed, when he saw me with my rifle. I never saw that dog again.

if we had matrix justice, where owners of vicious dogs that killed children were automatically sentenced to death themselves, most such dogs would soon be turned over to the J.P.Getty Wild Canine Preserve.
Grab a bag of rocks for a buck,, nice round river rocks?

Step-grandpa's pit bull had killed Chihuahua

Hayashi admitted that one of the dogs had killed his pet Chihuahua a year ago when the family lived in Antioch. But he said he never believed his dogs would attack Jacob.
Asked if he believed pit bulls were a dangerous breed, Hayashi paused and said, "What I know now? Yes." He added, "Pit bulls - all dogs in general - I don't want them. I don't care for them."
Before the tragedy, Hayashi said he had always believed that pit bull owners - and not the dogs themselves - were the problem.
"Well, I used to think that way," he said. "That's what got me into this mess, just thinking that they're just regular dogs. I can understand a dog biting or nipping, but to maul somebody until he's dead? To tear out somebody's face?"
...
He said he was not "totally responsible for Jacob's death. However, I am responsible for negligence of those dogs, (not) getting rid of those dogs when I should have.
"I personally don't think I should be behind bars because I made a bad decision about keeping the dogs," Hayashi said. "I'm not like (a) social outcast. I just made a bad decision about keeping the dogs."
The dog that killed his Chihuahua, he said, was Kiwi, a male who was about 6 months old at the time.
"It was my responsibility to do the appropriate action when it happened," Hayashi said. But he said he had decided to keep all five dogs "because I didn't have the heart to euthanize them."

Hayashi, who was not home when the boy was mauled, was arrested Thursday on suspicion of child endangerment and owning a mischievous animal that causes great bodily injury or death, both felonies. He is being held in lieu of $120,000 bail. Prosecutors are expected to decide next week whether to file formal charges.

on one of these incidents, or maybe it was one in San Francisco, the dog's owner was acquitted (i think she was the mother of a kid who was killed).

I don't know. I know in my business I've met hundreds of Pitbulls, and most are lovable pets. I would never own one due to the potential liability.
In a home delivery business for 40+ years, two dogs bit me. Both were chihauhaus. I was once attacked by an almost full grown doberman, which I killed with a glass half gallon bottle, which exploded on contact, and nearly beheaded the lunging canine. I've stared down several german shepherds, great danes, and a few mutts, and a Rottweiler or two. I've been nipped at by Chows and Siberian Huskies. Did you know that Poodles were bred as fighting dogs, and the strange grooming was originally for fighting.
Dogs are dogs, and people who keep them as pets ought to be aware that they are descended from wild animals and can revert to those instincts.
