It’s lower now. Not because the vaccines are less effective, however, but because the percentage of the vaccinated population is very high.
Vaccines offer about 94% protection.
So, 6 out of every 100 people aren’t properly protected by it (usually old people and people with underlying illnesses).
So, as more and more people are either vaccinated or recovered, the hospital population shifts.
So, if you look at the current statistics (40% of current hospitalisations in the UK are unvaccinated) and that this group is representative of 14% (or so) of the population, it’s a massive over representation.
In the IC’s it worse still.
Hence that I don’t totally agree with your numbers, but the message is exactly the same.
And equally hence, it’s why the omicron variant is particularly worrying. It looks like it can re-infect and that a third shot prevents that from happening (the research results are just trickling in, so it might be less severe than anticipated, but governments are suitably worried and are hurrying just in case).
If the research proves the worst case scenario, it means the 14% of unvaccinated people are gonna be filling up the hospitals again. So, by boostering everyone else, you can attempt to keep the health system from overloading.
It’s also the reason why vaccine mandatory discussions are being held in several countries. You can’t keep locking down societies, bowing to the wishes of a minority, destroying business and over-working hospital workers. These measures are fine for short term use, but they’re not going to work in the long term management of society.
