If the holder is expected to, or expecting to, suffocate him, he would be said to have applied suffocation. The word hold would mean ....don't kill him, just restrain him. The word 'hold' qualilfies his actions.

To each his own. Leather is protective, like if you are on any bike. It is a protective material. The only thing hoodies protect from is recognition.
