Chinese scientists tell pigeon to fly by remote control
BEIJING -- Chinese scientists have succeeded in implanting electrodes in the brain of a pigeon to remotely control the bird's flight, state media said.

Xinhua News Agency said the scientists at the Robot Engineering Technology Research Center at Shandong University of Science and Technology in eastern China used the micro electrodes to command the bird to fly right or left, and up or down.

The implants stimulated different areas of the pigeon's brain according to electronic signals sent by the scientists via computer, mirroring natural signals generated by the brain, Xinhua quoted chief scientist Su Xuecheng as saying.

It was the first such successful experiment on a pigeon in the world, said Su, who conducted a similar successful experiment on mice in 2005. (AP)

You think any of the suicide bombers we're hearing about lately are advanced versions of this technology instead of raving zealots or grief stricken, rage filled people?

what's the payload capacity of a pigeon?

Nope.

Maybe not suicide bombers
But what do you think the ultimate goal of this research is? To tell a pigeon what to do? Surely not

No. I think suicide bombers are brainwashed religious fanatics.

I did find the pigeon story interesting though. And don't forget the mice. So we now have the ability to control the actions of pigeons and mice. I say keep going forward! Soon we can implant those things into women.

You can imagine what the (probably male) scientists will control within women: The right leg and the left leg.
Then issue the command; "Legs open!!!"

It depends if you've already cleaned the car or not.

the first experiements of this sort I heard of were to control cockroaches. Maybe initially there were doing it for interest, but the financers were military types wanting to use cockroaches to carry listening devices ("bugs" if you will) through sewage & ventilation pipes in order to gain intelegence. Pigeons with spy cameras next?

Until we got told by the government that we would be 'safer from terrorism' if we had a chip in our heads with which, from time to time, they could control our actions, ie maybe during an evacuation of a bombed train or something.

or when we vote. or decide to voice our displeasure with our leaders

&c &c &c

The goal is simply to understand the brain, I'm sure.

Though, now that I think about it, it could be a way of making cyborgs with increased reflexes.

What about homing pigeons? They're going to blow their own home up.

Yeah, but fortunately they aren't going be in a position to care.

ha ha! funny you should mention this, but apparently the Russans in WWII (being a resorceful but poorly equiped army) trained dogs to carry bombs and run under tanks (with fake bombs n training of course!). Unfortunately they trained the dogs using their own tanks, so when they released them in bale the dogs did a u-turn away from the German tanks and ran under the Russian tanks, blowing them up instead.

There have however been successful use of suicide animals in warfare for a long time. One medieval actic when storming a town was to catch the birds that lived in the house rafters when the flew outside the town walls to feed, dip them in fuel and then set fire to them. In their panic theyd fly home into the rafters of the town and set fire to the houses.

Wow. You could really upset a lot of people nowadays trying something like that.
