Research has identified the region of England with the highest percentage of smokers - 53% are smokers.

Coincidentally (?) it is also one of the poorest and "deprived" areas.
It has been pointed out that a 20- a day habit costs £1,600 to £1,800 a year!!
Now, to me this doesn't sound very smart - this is a huge proportion of your income if you are low paid (or not paid).

So, this begs the questions - do these people smoke because they are stupid, are they poor because they are stupid, are they stupid because they are poor, are they poor and stupid because they smoke?

Seems crazy to me.

Why not just deport the poor people? They are the ones who commit all the crimes and use up the tax dollars anyway.

Being poor is not a crime; however, it also is NOT an excuse to commit crime. My folks grew up during the depression, and threy turned out just fine. Lock up all violent criminals for life or place them on a remote Island and let them govern themselves. Drop pedophiles/child murderers from 10,000 ft. w/o a parachute, chop off all rapist's hands and penises, petty thieves are relegated to the chain-gang, cleaning up the streets and roadways....second offenders are sent to prison for life.....no pussy-footing here like the do in NZ, if I was in charge...agree, boarman? 😉

People who are poor, tend to have a negative outlook on thier future. They do not see themselves getting wealthier and do not see a bright future for themselves. They therefore care a lot less about saving for the future and thier own health. Poor people are more likely to engage in smoking, excessive drinking and unprotected sex.
Poor people are also usually less educated and are less able to understand the consequeses of such actions.
I know these are generalizations and not true for every single poor person.

Yeah you have a good way of punishment ,but certainly a bullet would be cheaper in some instances ,like murderers ,rapists ,paedophiles.A little bit harsh for second offenders but they should no better ,all depends on their crime though .
With punishment like this society would at least start to conform ,Well said Chancre (i wont be making a habit of saying that LOL) 😀😉

The Poor are overall less health-conscious than those who are well-off. I suppose health is not the main preoccupation of those who live on the bread line. Although you could have a healthy diet on a budget (I was a student, once!), they seem to prefer a diet of fast food and pre-packed and tinned stuff.
I've noticed that the ladies from the lower-class, as well as enjoying the odd ciggie, also have a penchant for gold jewellery and tattoos, these are expensive, no? 🙄

Well it's usually cheap gold jewellery but yes.
These people might be on a budget, but I would have thought these people would be on a slightly better budget if they saved nearly £2000pa by not smoking.
Similarly, most of the houses on my street (a mix of council housing and ex-council housing) have satellite dishes - SKY costs £400+ per year if you take the sports packages. Something I cannot justify purchasing for myself.
Priorities, people!!
