There's no such thing as a "regular Republican" anymore at least none that have any chance of winning the nomination in 2024.
I think Ben Sasse, senator from NE, is one of the few sensible Republicans, not in thrall to Trump, but he does not have enough traction to run for the presidency.

This is a very real possibility. The Donald has so much legal baggage now, I doubt he'd win the nomination anyway.
If Trump doesn't win the nomination, he may run as an independent and basically hand the election over to the dems

If that's true, then a poor midterms would be in the best long-term interest of the GOP.

but everyone blames Biden unfairly for the current condition.

The reports are he is itching to make a declaration before the mid-terms possibly because he, like most Republicans, think they're going to have a big win there. I rate the chances of Trump being prosecuted for anything related to his attempts to nullify the 2020 election, including the January 6th riot, as "low".
