Yesterday I read in the papers about a 35 year old woman who died on
the plane back home from Thailand. She felt sick and fainted after
having vomited in the toilet. The stewardess asked for a Doctor and got
a doc. and two nurses. The doctor soon realised that it was serious and
asked the pilot to land on the nearest available airport. The pilot came
out of the cockpit, looked at the woman and then kept the course without
change. Five hours later (!) they landed the plane in Moscow after much
begging from the Doctor. But it was too late. The woman died and left
her husband and two kids behind.

Now, if a Doctor shows his ID and says you need to land the plane,
there's only one excuse I can think of, and that's if there was no airport
that could accomodate for such a large plane, but the one in Moscow. But
somehow I find that hard to believe. In any event, I think the pilot
should be prosecuted for downright murder.

Debate.

In this article not a word is said about the five hour delay, but in Swedish
newspapers this was clearly pointed out. 😕

I would be cautios with this, stock mate, until more information and
details arrive, before we proceed to crucify anybody.

Particularly regarding the health condition of the woman, if she or her
doctor were aware of it, if the airline provided detailed information
about the risks involved (or the doctor, for that matter), and things
like that.

International flights are probably like cruise ships in international waters .. a law unto themselves.
You leave your homebase and venture onto the international scene, you're at the mercy of your pilot/captian.
We need the no!maurader to answer this one. I'm sure he's expert on all international law.

Looking at the route, it seems like the plane would have been over Siberia 5 hours before Moscow. I figure the pilot had good reason to believe that there wasn't any suitable airports close by at the time (speculation, of course).

I cannot read Swedish though. I really need more information, but my first impression is that the pilot shouldn't be prosecuted for murder.

I agree, where the aircraft was is important, they did make an emergency landing in Moscow instead of going to Sweden, they could have been in the middle of no place or had some otherwise unsuitable places to land.

I think I said in the original post that having nowhere suitable to land would
be the only possible excuse. I doubt it's really so, but there's no follow-up
on the story in the press (that I've seen) so we just won't know what
happened next.

The plane was over Siberia? Look at a map, lotta nuthin' over Siberia for thousands of miles, and to the south you have delightful places that are war-torn crap holes of questionable security, so it's unlikely they had a lot of choices.
Don't judge the pilot too harshly, it's not like he's a minimum wage shmoo abusing his power. Things going on in the story you know nothing about.
The fact that there's been no follow-up seems to indicate that the story is a typical journalistic slash& burn job, make a stink, create a controversy, then go away and forget to mention the details that exhonerate everyone later.

There were plenty of bigger cities where the pilot could have requested to
land on the way which weren't on route, but definitely not five hours away. I
don't buy that one. I say we should form a mob now, find out his identity
and have us a nice old-fashioned hanging.

There's something else which sounds strange - according to the newspaper article, it took almost 50 minutes from the landing of the airplane until the ambulance arrived. I would have expected that they had been informed, and the ambulance should already have been waiting. Of course there's no way to know why this didn't happen.

No, I think the charge would be criminal negligence of some kind, not murder. Murder would have been if the pilot had picked up a dinner napkin and strangled the woman with it.

As for fault, one would have to decide if the charter company was liable on the grounds that they had no emergency procedure in place or the procedure was inadequate or the pilot had not been properly trained.

The pilot would be liable most likely only if he did not follow the specified procedure, or did not follow a standard of behavior common to professional pilots.

No doubt there is a lot more to the story than what has been revealed.

Having said that, I will be on for some beers and an old fashioned hanging, as stocken suggests. 😉

Suppose the pilot has been told (it's a charter company, remember) that making an emergency landing gets him fired with the landing fees deducted from his salary?

Still want to hang him?

Plenty of bigger cites over Siberia? Look at a map and name a few, please.
This is a large jet liner, right? Do any of these places have 10,000 foot runways, and services/flight crews available to get the jet checked out and safely airborn again? What about availability of medical services in some of these far away isolated places, think they're ready to pounce on a sick person off a plane as good samaritans? It took an hour for an ambulance to arrive in Moscow once they landed, how great will things be in Ubetyerassistan?
Lotta stuff here you don't know about. Let it go.

Reread my post and you will see I never wrote anywhere that there are
plenty of bigger cities over Siberia. I will debate only with people who take
the time to read properly.
