There is no doubt that political ambition is a major factor in Emanuel’s decision to exit Washington, but the stunning decline of the Obama presidency must also have played a key role in his thinking. With Barack Obama increasingly seen as a liability within his own party, and just 37 percent of Americans saying they are more likely to vote for a candidate if backed by the president, nerves are clearly fraying inside the White House with the prospects for re-election in 2012 looking increasingly bleak.
