of course, but I'm curious: chess junkies who inhabit the internet are a diverse lot; still, it seems that many are either avowed gamers, or serious computer folks. I'd like to know if anyone has any data on relative strength, but I would welcome wild guesses, too.

On another site, or in a book--I cannot recall, I read that computer programmers are above average as chess players. Of course, gamers have been telling me that they are smarter than the average schmo since I was in Junior high (a few years before the first Atari). Of course, we all know that chess makes you smart.

Its not about IT people (or mathematicians, or whatever) being smarter per se.
Its about the same sort of thought processes being used in these sort of disciplines as are used in playing chess. The same neron paths.
So, you find that a lot of strong chess players are IT people, maths teachers, engineers or the like.

I know some dyslexic artistic types who can't do math , spell worth a damn , are hopeless with computers - who are cracker-jack chess players and gamers . I'm not sure where these guys fit in . (I've got the dyslexia and am hopeless with computers but the gift of being a great chess player got left out of the mix for me . sigh.)

Yep, all my friends tell me I am great at chess, and think I must be great at math, what they don't know is I am a useless schizo who "acheived" perhabs the lowest math grade in Dartmouth High history one year, for 12th grade. I also could read a sentance of a book, and re-read it several times for 2 straight hours, and simply not be able to memorize the sentance. I was as hopeless as they come in the westernized scientific/mathematical (arts do not matter) school system, and my grades were just plain awful.

God, what really pissed me off is the scientific kids could simply cross their arms and say, "I'm not taking any art, I suck at it!" and get wacko good grades, yet me having an artistic mind, couldn't say, "I suck at math/science, I'm not taking it!" I HAD to take up to 10 science/math courses as a REQUIREMENT in High School, while the science geeks didn't even have to take one art course, figure that out? What are we, the borg, some scientific/militaristic techno society with no individuality or artistry? Isn't there enough scientists as it is in the western world? Sorry, drifting off topic, but I am really pissed with our school system by only offering oppertunities and greatness (of grades in particular) to those with scientific minds.

Anyways, intuition and artistry is probably the best way to go from beginner to a good player quickly, I went from 1150 OTB to 1710 OTB in only 6 months using the artists mind, but after that, my improvement stoped. It's geting to the point that if I want to get higher, I simply have to be able to calculate complex variations, your gut and pattern recognition simply isn't enough to advance to the master chess level. And of course, my rating is naturally inferior in RHP as with correspondance chess with slow time controls, calculation goes much further then instinct and intuition.

So, if someone is blessed with both artistic and scientific ability and gets into chess, he should learn artisticly to reach compatence, then scientificly to acheive mastery, but you would be amazed how many casual players outright demolish other casual players, who happen to be math geniuses. I know for a fact I beat most casual players who have played for years and they all have BA's in science/math, yet I am a lowly deemed "uneducated poor artist" in this CRAPPY capitalist world.

There's no future in art across North America, better hope you become a weapon scientist, that seems to be the most important job to us.

DAMMMMNN!!!! - Dude , double up on the prozac !

Yeah , you're right the wolrd isn't set up for us artistic types . But before you start beating your head against trees , remember it has it's compensations . Envy the corperate types when they're 55 and having their 1st or 2nd heart attack . Or envy my neighbor - late 20's , brilliant programmer&web designer making serious jack . But his old ladies got him into blowwing it all and then some on the house refurbish , Lexis , Minicooper , trip to Ireland , and #2 baby . He doesn't have time to take a decent crap . Every time I see him he's got dark circles under his eyes and can only talk about wishing he could sleep . I've been working in the arts 17 years . I'm poor but my kids eat fine . I drive an 92 ford . My house needs some work I can't afford right now . I've got problems like everyone else - but for some reason , the older I get the more people tell me they wish they had done like I did and not just chased $'s .
I guess the point is that the grass is never greener on the other side of the fence . Be happy you've been able to discover and cultivate your tallents .
As to the chess thing ? You're dead on by my figuring . I'm not afraid to take on anyone otb . I win a lot more than I lose playing live over a real board . Playing on line against the same level of competition I'm about 10-20 wins over dead-even . I have a hard time with a flat 2dimensional screen . When others have time to slow things down , I have to fight to not lose my train of thought (even notes don't help that much ). A friend I used to play on another site beat me 5 times out of 5 online . Prior to that he didn't beat me otb in 15 games . I've played him live this month 3 times , and won 2 .
Oh well , I'm just in this for fun anyway . It's not like I'm getting paid for this , and the reality of never becomming a GM is something I can easily live with .

My condolences on your recent humiliation at the hands of StarValleyWy.

Game 845063

I'd be happy to humiliate you further, but you have to subscribe first. Perhaps if you save whatever change you find at the bottom of those ditches...

😀

Cheers!
