"Red sludge is a byproduct of the refining of bauxite into alumina, the basic material for manufacturing aluminum. It contains heavy metals and is toxic if ingested. Treated sludge is often stored in ponds where the water eventually evaporates, leaving behind a dried red clay-like soil."

"MAL Rt., the Hungarian Aluminum Production and Trade Company that owns the Ajkai plant, has insisted the red sludge is not considered hazardous waste according to EU standards. The company has also rejected criticism that it should have taken more precautions to shore up the reservoir."

Question for Debate: At what point do idiotic statements become "heinous crimes against humanity" punishable by death -- preferably by immersion in toxic sludge?

they should've made it into bricks or something. maybe after refining out more metals.

they used to pump that stuff in the air in the USA. a white shirt you put on the morning would turn red by afternoon (said my professor). he was 80 miles from the bauxite plant!

Can you really kill someone by immersion in toxic sludge?

If the toxins don't do the trick then you still have suffocation as a back-up.

And more on topic I'd like to say it's pretty obvious that if your reservoir just broke and flooded a couple of villages with toxic waste you should have taken more precautions. It's hardly rocket science is it ? You've got a reservoir, the contents of that reservoir will put pressure on the reservoir. Make sure your reservoir can withstand the pressure.

a guy got beat up and dumped into the canal that runs through Honolulu once. he died of a massive infection from the sewage.
