Today's edition of the Washington Post published a statement by Attorney General Alberto Gonzalez which warned reporters for the New York Times that those who were responsible for revealing the NSA's domestic surveillance and data-mining programs may be prosecuted under the 1917 Espionage Act.

Is the prosecution of our reporters in the interest of ...[text shortened]... Or is it a step toward a more-or-less state-controlled press under a totalitarian government?
I have long questioned the freedom of the press. I think most of what we hear is watered down second hand news that do not ruffle the wrong feathers. in this case, I think they knew they would ruffle the wrong feathers, however, I think it was calculated and politically motivated because the powers that be in the liberal press hate Bush "STANG" style. It was more or less a calculated risk they were willing to take to get at Bush. As a matter of fact, I would not be suprised if it was STANG who leaked it to the press. The biggest question, however, should be who leaked this story to the press so that they could report it to the public? That is the person or persons that they should be going after. This of coarse is assuming they were sworn to secrecy, which I can't imagine they were not.

The 1917 espionage act eh? Gonzo is really reaching. What's next, bringing back prohibition or getting rid of that pesky "Women's right to vote" amendment? Tough decisions.

Perhaps if the Bush Administration spent less time committing acts that had to be covered up, they wouldn't be so worried about leaks.

There's a reason "Freedom of the Press" is part of the 1st Amendment of the Bill of Rights. The founding fathers got that one right.

See ya bro!
