George W. Bush 2001 - Current Republican

Great Depression 1929 - 1939

Is it me or do the Republicans always drive our economy into the crapper? (Other than Ike and nobody could have killed the post-WWII economy)

So armed with this data, why would anyone vote Republican?

Oh, clean up the mess... Like the Great Depression? Or the Depression in the 70's following 8 years of Nixon and Ford. Or do you mean the mess in '89. I can't recall who the president was before that. Can you?

Or is it the other way around? I think they take turns.

An easy read on the myths of the Great Depression:

Obviously, you forget Jimmy (peanutman)Carter and how well the US economy did under his administration.... double digit inflation, double digit unemployment and 20% interest rates.

I have seen Republicans try to compare Obama with Carter. Both are "nice guys" and very intelligent, however, Carter was by most counts a horrible President.

In addition, I used to hear Republicans say that we should be wary of Democrat Presidents because they seemed to always get us in a war. They would point to WW1, WW2, Vietnam, etc., however, the Bush boys broke that trend. Who knows, maybe McCain will break this economic trend as well?

Nixon was really a Democrat if you ask most Republicans today, or at least a RINO, as was McCain until he selected Palin.

If you ask a true liberal, she'll tell you that Clinton was a conservative with strong Republican leanings. Plus he was a pig, or as HST puts it, "a small-time punk with bad habits" ( Better than Sex )

So it's Clinton's fault the economy is in a mess now?

Or are you one of the few who think everytthing is still fine?

Look up Phil Gramm. Add "foreclosure" to your search. It may interest you that, while officially out of McCain's campaign, many suspect that he still has McCain's "financial ear."

There was enough idiocy on both sides of the aisle to make both parties look bad during the Great Depression.

Given the mess that Reagan inherited from Carter, you'd have to be an incredible critic to claim that Reagan drove our economy into the crapper. If anything he got us OUT of the crapper and lead a period of massive economic growth--very arguably we've been in a period of growth for the last 27 years due in part to the lower taxes of Reaganomics.

I didn't forget Jimmy Carter. Carter was in office for only 4 years trying to clean up the mess of 8 years of Republicans. Please re-read the original post.

Most economic historians see the reappointment of Paul Volker to the Federal Reserve as Reagan's best and most useful economic decision. Volker had been appointed in the first place by Carter.

The stagflation that brought Carter down was brought under control by his actions--appointing Volker--while Reagan reaped the benefits of low inflation.

Reagan's tax cuts are a myth. The lonf period of prosperity that both Reagan's fans and Clinton's cheerleaders attribute to them is a consequence of the actions of neither. Rather, it is a consequence of the revolution in technology that gave us Red Hot Pawn (computers, internet, etc.) and of the outsourcing of jobs that Republicans and Democrats both criticize in one breath while advancing in the other. Outsourcing keeps prices low and breaks the backs of unions. All Reagan's tax breaks did was enhance the X-Mas bonuses and salaries of the transnational execs that eliminate jobs for working Americans.

WHAT MESS??
Better yet, explain how anyone at any time cleans up a mess in Washington. All that seems to happen is going from mess to mess to messier to messiest.
