Today's newspaper included an article in which a high school student in an ethnic studies program stated that a baseball poster in a classroom "should be soccer or rugby to validate other cultures." Should. Not "in addition to" and not "it would be nice." This is in a town that had two baseball stadiums devoted to major league spring training a few months ago, so it's not like we're far removed from baseball here. Am I the only one who thinks that acknowledging other cultures doesn't mean ignoring the dominant one?

The US government seems to do a pretty decent job of this. Though I'm not necessarily suggesting Americans as dominant, we should if anything be paramount to our own govenrment. I digress though, I do agree with you.

Would your 'baseball culture' be undermined if there was not a baseball poster on the classroom wall?

Nope. The point is why object to it? I had a baseball poster up for a while with some rah-rah message on it about doing your best. I rotated it with rah-rah posters of basketball and football. If there were rah-rah posters of ballet and women's gymnastics and frisbee throwing and golf and soccer and chess and hair styling, I'd put those up too. But to take one moment in time and complain about it is bizarre. To have no baseball poster because some kids were taught that it invalidates their culture is also bizarre. What else did that teacher have on his or her walls?

It's a student in an ethnic studies class. A minor, no less. Why would a minor student in ethnic studies be someone you take seriously about such issues?

Even MLK jr was just a young activist at one point in his career.

So? Should we treat every rebellious high schooler as if they were MLK Jr?

MLK Jr. was in college at age 15. He skipped his 9th and 12th grades and got his Bachelor's at age 19.

Is this kid that kind of quality?

BTW, King was 26 when he starting being an activist.

26 is still relatively young in the grand scheme of things. My only point is that simply dismissing even the most insignificant of people may not always be the best idea.

If you don't, you'll have to dismiss important people. Do you really have time to listen carefully to each and every individual of the 6.6 billion individuals on the planet?

My point is don't dismiss the person on account of who he is, rather on what he's saying.

Discussing "The Race" are we?

Governing Board member Adelita Grijalva doesn't seem to want an "overwhelmingly Latino district" to study other races in their ethnic studies class. Well THAT makes sense. Let's have White Appreciation be the theme in the mostly caucasion school districts, shall we? I mean White is an ethnicity too...oh wait, we're using vocabulary like "The Race" (in Spanish). Let's get it over with. Mostly caucasian school districts' ethnic studies classes will emphasize the Aryan Race. Does that sound reasonable? Let the Jews study the Zion Race. Let the Blacks study the Oppressed Slave Race. Ethnic studies classes discussing other ethnicities besides the majority? Ridiculous.

Let's denounce the inappropriateness of "a patriotic poster featuring the Statue of Liberty, the American flag and an eagle." It's not right to make these Americans from another country feel that their old country isn't as good as the one they immigrated to.

Cool! I'm glad all the four year olds out there who say "hitting is bad" are worthy of a topic in Debates. That's going to be a lot of threads, but we can't dismiss them!

Why does THIS high schooler get a thread on Debates? There are a lot of other high schoolers out there. You're dismissing them all.

Yes, this denouncement of a baseball poster is equivalent to the American Revolution. That makes sense.
