Woman gets probation for starving son with cult
AP

By BEN NUCKOLS, Associated Press Writer Ben Nuckols, Associated Press Writer – 38 mins ago

BALTIMORE – A woman who starved her 1-year-old son to death at the behest of a religious cult leader was given a sentence Wednesday that won't require her to serve any more jail time.

Ria Ramkissoon, 23, pleaded guilty last year to child abuse resulting in the death of Javon Thompson. She admitted denying food and water to the 16-month-old child when he did not say "Amen" before a meal. Javon wasted away over the course of a week before his heart stopped beating.

Baltimore Circuit Judge Timothy J. Doory suspended the balance of Ramkissoon's 20-year sentence and ordered her to report to a residential treatment facility for young women. The treatment program includes Bible study, and Ramkissoon will be required to complete the program, which doesn't have a specified length, before she can live on her own.

Ramkissoon, who has been in jail since her August 2008 arrest, also was given five years of probation.

Texas Again! – Another teen gets 10 years for graffiti.

KINGSVILLE — Teenager Manuel K. Medrazo pleaded guilty to felony spray painting of the Kleberg County Courthouse, probation office and vehicles, said District Attorney John Hubert.

Medrazo was sentenced Jan. 4 to 10 years in prison for retaliation, a third degree felony. The sentence was reduced to 10 years probation and restitution for damage he and two juveniles caused.

The charge was increased from criminal mischief to retaliation because of words sprayed Sept. 22 on vehicles that targeted probation officials at Kleberg and Kenedy counties, Hubert said.

The juveniles will faces charges in Kleberg County Court at a later date.

Texas graffiti writer to serve two, not eight years – Two years is still to long for 7′Gs of damage!
Thursday, December 24th, 2009

CORPUS CHRISTI — Last week a judge gave a graffiti vandal the maximum sentence: eight years. But it turns out the most he can serve is two.

Sebastian Perez, 18, pleaded guilty Dec. 11 to three graffiti charges along with possession of marijuana, all state jail felonies.

He admitted to a spray-painting spree that lasted from March to August and caused more than $7,300 in damages.

He gave a tearful plea to 148th District Judge Marisela Saldaña for probation. Instead she had handed down the maximum two years in state jail on each count and stacked the sentences.

I would hope they throw the maximum sentence at this woman.

Would not want other parents to get the idea they can starve their kids and get away with it with just a slap on the wrist.

A person who's that far gone in religious hysteria is probably not going to be deterred by the prospect of going to jail if her kid dies and is probably not going to be any more likely to engage in such hysterical behavior because if she thinks we won't serve much prison time.

I'm not saying she shouldn't be punished. Clearly, she should. But I'm not sure how much effect deterrence has in this type of case.

What's the big deal? The first guy got probation for vandalism and the second got 2 years for vandalism and illegal drug possession.

Doesn't sound so ridiculous to me.

I think I'm usually on your side of debates. I was trying to be sarcastic here.

I would 1000 times more rather spend 20 years in jail than to have to live with the
fact I starved my kid to death.

Not sure I'd use the adjective "wimpy," but yes, I'd agree with the sentiment.
