okay-i currently work in a self-service restaurant. my job title is catering assistant, as is everyone there apart from the chefs, bakers, supervisors, manager and assistant manager. the people who clear tables, the servarie staff, the dishwashers. all catering assitants. we all have identical job descriptions.
however, any male employee's who start are automatically put onto dishes. sometimes tables! but that has only happeend twice in the past year and they end up on the dishes after a couple of weeks anyway. and the girls are either put on tables or, if their pretty, the serverie. there are a total of 3 guys that have worked on the servarie in the 4 years of the restaurant. 2 are still with us. 1 girl has ever worked dishes for longer than half a day. 1. ever. until last week when we boys started to leave. there are now 3 experienced dishwashers, and we need 4 for your average day. so they started to put girls on dishwashers to prove that dishwashing is not just a guys job! fair doos. but then today, we were informed that they they were going to traineveryone on everything. and they were gonna do this in half-day stints. so, for instance, you'd be on dishes for half the day, then tables for the other half. again, fair doo's. everyone, that is, apart from me and the other dishwasher that was in. no. not us. we were on dishes aaaaaaaaaaaaall day. all day. again. i've been on tables for one day since i started at the start of this year. one day. 9 months an i'm still on dishes. the other guys at 3 years and counting...
basically-the things that get me are that,
1. we're not actually employed as dishwasher. i was told i wouldn't be on dishes every day. i have complained. nothing has happened.
2. although dishes is no longer just a guys job, the serverie is still a females one. we had no guys on it today. all the guys that were in, bar the chef, were on dishes.
3. and also that i get paid the same of less than everyone else but, as is the general opinion, work my butt off more than anyone else (apart from the other dishwashers...well-actually-they're kidna lazy...yeah-i recon i work the hardest...😉). i get paid £3.50 an hour and they wonder why they can't keep staff?!?
tomorrow is, however, my last day. i'm starting work next week as a wiater in a 4* hotel. but i was just wondering, incase something like this comes along again, what i can do about it? is it actually sexual discrimination?
work sucks
i wanna claim on the dole 🙂

Originally posted by geniusWhat can you do about it? You are doing the right thing. You are moving on. Most people go through jobs that they find rather unfulfilling and frustrating. When I was much younger I worked in an assembly line job and the okther workers were very disrespectful of me because I was new. However , this job served its purpose for me. I went back to school in the fall with the conviction that I would never have that kind of job again. Good luck with the new job.

of course discriminisation is still within work and life i worked in a factory fot 6 years 50% female, guess who had the sit down jobs and who had to move the 180kilo drums to and from there places and guess who said that was fair. but they were quicker at 5gram fine work which was a lot and required offten.
