The vast majority of those detained by ICE now are workers, students and parents who are contributing economically to the US. The present policy is in service to white supremacist notions (as espoused publicly by Stephen Miller) and detrimental to the country as a whole both socially and economically.

The best path forward would be for Congress to give a path to citizenship for those already here who are working, going to school and raising families and liberalize the criteria for legal immigration. That won't serve the white supremacist goals of this Administration, but it would make economic sense in a country with a labor shortage and social sense in one with a low birth rate.
