Much of this debate forum has been dominated by a clash of two opposing world views, which you might classify as left against right, liberal against conservative or, occasionally, Europe against the US. Anyway, what I wondered is, what have those of us on one side of the divide learned about the views of the other? Are we any closer to a mutual understanding? Do we like each other better or worse than when we started?

I won't put anything myself yet because to be honest, I'm still not sure. At times I feel we have moved towards areas of common ground and at others I'm staring out across a massive chasm.

Rich.

First off, I didn't rec this post. (not that it isn't deserving, I am sure it is.)

I was about to post 'my views' on some of the past topics.

Next I heard a "PoP".

That would be 'the can of worms'. Good topic, sure to be fun.... but I dare not post here. I will be reading.... I would think.

Had to post to say I wouldn't post. I look forward to the debate, but will keep a safe distance. 😉

Edit! Just wanted to say the reason I mentioned "recs" was because I was surprised to see a post with a rec and no reply.... They were perhaps thinking like me... Good topic, but.......

I have learned that this is a great place to test your beliefs and world view.

You want to find out if there is any weakness in your position, post it here. At best, you will find out if you are wrong. At least, you will find out if your arguments are weak or flawed.

What I haven't learned is why people think being confident about your position make you more likely to be wrong. As much as I disagree with many liberals and agnostics, I admire those that are willing to argue their points. What I really find disgusting are people who think they are better people by being wish-washy. Especially when it comes to other Christians who seek the approval of men above God's.

I like finding people who are just a dogmatic as I am, and who can argue without worrying about hurting my feelings. ivanhoe can listen to clocks, I'd rather tell people how to make clocks and have them show my where I am wrong. I think I learn more about clocks that way.

Debating here has motivated me to study philosophy, apologetics, logic, evolutionism, and most importantly, the Bible. However, (and let this be a warning to all who read this) it has done nothing for my chess game.

I agree with you debating here is very stimulating. You are forced to investigate things further, so it deepens your understanding about a lot of subjects.
