i have heard overwhelming opinions of those i truly respect which say America will become a socialist nation.

1) will this happen?

2) will it be good or bad for the "American dream?"

3) will it be temporary?

Never happen, democrate senators and house are not that far away from republicans so even with a dem controlled congress, socialist reforms would not stand a chance.

1) It is happening right now. We're already very close to 50%-51% of the population receiving a check from the government every month for an unearned benefit and just elected a president who admires the social welfare states in Europe and would like to implement French-style government/labor relations here.

2) Confiscatory levels of taxation, increased unionization of the labor force (through introduction of "card check"😉, government regulation of most industries including capital and energy, government control of media content (through reintroduction of the Orwellian named "Fairness Doctrine"😉, and protectionism all bode ill for the economy. Not to mention, they are all anathema to the "American Dream."

3) It is very near impossible to end an entitlement once it's started. Also, I suspect that once Americans wake up from their hangover of "change," they will throw any leftist politicians out of office, replace them with more sensible people and start veering toward the center again.

This might have been true 10 years ago, but most centrist Democrats are long gone and have been replaced with very left-leaning ones. A lot of this will depend on how the new president decides to govern. If he governs as a centrist, then he will have four smooth years. If he decides to govern as a leftist, then Americans will have a very difficult time.

Ritter, a serious question: Do you really believe all this?

If this is a) even remote true and b) "an anathema to the American dream" it is a bit surprising everybody voted for him really.

Why do you ask? Do you think all these things I described would be bad for America?

Because I think you exaggerate, passing from the field of reasonable concerns into blatant sci-fi paranoia.

But would all this be bad for America should it come to pass?

Because your inane statements get shot down time after time after time.

If all of these things are crazy, or will harm ordinary Americans by derailing the American dream, then why did so many Americans vote for Obama? These are things he and his party have pledged to do. It's what they campaigned on, it is in their speeches and it's on their Websites. Or are you saying you didn't know any of this when you voted?

all extremes or in a big dose are harmful, of course

But let'+s be honest: what you draw there is outlandish, impossible, sci-fi, etc

1) will this happen?
A little.

2) will it be good or bad for the "American dream?"
Good. The rich have dominated political decisions for the last 8 years. Time for the other guys to have a say. Democracy fails when power becomes concentrated.

3) will it be temporary?
Ya. Always is. That's also good.
