Dr. Robert Malone says vaccines are "not working" and children "will be hospitalized" from the vaccine. Metal Brain hears it and believes it whole cloth, even though I could find hundreds of research articles and thousands of other scientists who disagree. There is nothing anyone can say to change Metal Brain's mind.
Donald J. Trump says his border security solutions are working. Earl and Mott believe him whole cloth, even though Border Patrol statistics show more successful illegal entries in 2019 compared to 2016. Nothing anyone can say will change a Trumpers mind on this though.
The My Pillow guy says the election was stolen. Millions of people listen to what the My Pillow Guy says and think, "You know what, he makes pillows but also some really good points about election fraud."
What's up with the cognitive dissonance? Why can't people change their minds with new and better information? I can see why this has led many people to think that we need to stop people from saying deliberately harmful things, because a large number of people will hear it, agree with it, and never change their minds.
What's the solution here? Facts don't matter.

Both are deliberate misinformation because they are meant to make you believe something that is not true. In the first case, "children will be hospitalized" is a partial truth but still misinformation because the statement is intentionally designed to make you believe vaccines are harmful. It ignores other facts from hundreds of scientists and more than a dozen public-health organizations and agencies strongly encouraging all eligible people 12 and older to get vaccinated, because the benefits “far outweigh any harm.”
Seatbelt decapitation is a similar type of misinformation. Anti public health folk used it in the 1960's protests against seatbelt mandates (i did my own research!!) It is designed to make you think seatbelts are bad. Decapitation is extremely rare.
