"What is the Freedom Toaster
The Freedom Toaster is a conveniently located, self-contained ‘Bring 'n Burn' facility, where users bring their own blank discs and make copies of the open source software they require.
But why do we need this?
The Freedom Toaster project began as a means of overcoming the difficulty in obtaining Linux and Open Source software due to the restrictive telecommunications environment in South Africa, where the easy downloading of large pieces of software is just not possible. "

I think, better yet, would be to allow for USB-storage devices with OO-software on it. That way, you can plug-in to just about any computer, do your s***t and save the files encrypted on your USB-pen. That's a very cheap alternative, if you can afford the USB-device to begin with.
Are there any FreedomUSBToaster projects out there?
Originally posted by stockeni dunno ... that's a good idea, you should post it to the freedomtoaster site .... you can get 256 MB jump drives for around $15 now, some linux distributions (like Puppy Linux and Damn Small Linux) only take up around 50 MB and are designed to boot from jump drives ... seems like a minor change to the kiosks, if they don't already have it on there ...

(not sure what burns they have but almost certainly they should have live-CDs included, probably that is the main course ...)
Originally posted by zeeblebotI'm quite a linux enthusiast myself. Love open-source. Using only OSS on my home computer. But there are times when you need to work well with windows. Aren't there already a kind of USB-pleasure-stick with open source software on it (like Open Office, Firefox, Mozilla and the like) that will work if you plug it into almost any computer (*nix, win, mac)?

Then you could use your files and programs on any public computer and without having to restart the machine itself. I think that's another interesting idea, that should be investigated.
It would make you very portable and the world could be even smaller than it is now.
