Seriously? They cave now?

And all 8 of them are not up for reelection.
And two of them are stepping down.

Obviously I’m not a democrat, but if I was, I would sure love to know how much extra dollars trickled into their off-shore bank accounts.

Yes, I agree.

Considering that new democrats had such tremendous results in this year's elections, yet the group we have now are too gutless to see this out to the end, maybe we should just toss all the current group in the trashbin and start over.

And what would have been accomplished in "the end", whenever that would have been, IYO?

Trump had already blamed the poor Republican showing in the elections last week on the shutdown. This shows he understands the concept, not that he'd admit it.

Republican popularity is already at a low point, except among the diehards.

I'm thinking if we'd held the line, at least some Republicans were this far from caving themselves and it might have snowballed into actual support for the ACA subsidies. They know the American people want to keep the subsidies. They don't act like it, but they know it.

With the elections over, and gettting a big "L" on that one, added to the lowest approval rating in quite awhile, and I think the castle walls were about to crack on this one. We had momentum.

Right now, getting the government restarted has just left us further away from our aims than we were before the elections. We wasted the momentum when these 8 senators just gave in like they did.

Surely you must have noticed the backlash to this short-sighted decision on social media.

You'd rather raise their health insurance to the point where they can't afford it?

Welcome back to 2009. When the poor had NO health insurance. When, if you got cancer, you just died.

Is that what you want for them?

Don't lie and say "no".

All the Republicans had to do to open the government was to vote on continuing the ACA subsidies. That's all.

Except you all are right now saying to the American people, "You want affordable health insurance? Better luck next time."

Even you can see what an asshole (dare I say, evil? ) thing that is to say, especially to those who cannot afford it when the subsidies disappear.

If you want to believe the spin on the shutdown helped the Democrats in the election, fine.

The election is over.

I don't change my views based on social media.

They'll be a vote on the subsidies in December according to the agreement made. Further disruption of the government and making it harder to deliver necessary services isn't going to make success on that vote any more likely.

I remember when the Republicans would play this shutdown game and the response was always it was irresponsible to interfere with basic governmental functions in the name of policy goals. I'm afraid most progressives are being hypocrites to reverse that view just because a different party is now in control of the Executive and Legislative branches.

Schumer voted against.

There were only 7 Dems who caved along with Angus King (I-ME).

The Republicans only needed 7 votes to pass reopening the government.

There, fixed it for you.

Without Republican support (are there any Republicans with morals in the Senate?) passing the ACA subsidies is a no-go and you know it. The idea was to make the Republicans want to reopen the government so badly that they would cave in, instead of the Democrats.

As it is now, the ACA subsidies are toast. Getting some Republicans to cave in was its only hope. But now it's moot. I hope these Democrats' constituencies appreciate the subsidies for ACA (AND the ACA itself once nobody can afford it) disappearing.
