It seems like a lot of people claim values and devlop standards from those.

I support to live by one own values. And I agree that standards can be an important tool to check, wehere one is positioned in terms of those values.

Some then proceed to "hold people to standards". That seems to have often the form to polarize extremely. So eiether you are 100% truthful or you are a "liar". Of course no-one is 100% truthful, so we are all liars, and so that is a standard that is not helpful to anybody.

I think there could be a few things helpful to make standards worthwhile:
* Avoid absolutes; Even if "truth" is one of my values, it is humanly impossible to be 100% truthful.
* Use gradings: "On a scale from 1 to 10, where do we perceive my truthfulness?"
* Be aware that each and every person has their own set of values. Again it is no use to make one value absolute For some truthfulness comes after Enjoyment of life or responsability, or compassion or security or any other value you could think of.

* Hold people to their standards if "holding to standards" needs to be done. So if we have a person claiming the "freedom" is very high on their value system, but tehy seem to think only of their own, it could be eye-opnenig to them to point this out.
