What would you choose? To be successful, whatever that may mean (money, power, influence, etc.), or to be truly happy? Or do you think they go hand in hand?

Personally, I would often (before) have chosen to be successful. I can't say, now, for sure, since I still feel that I can't be happy without a sense of success, but "success" for me ironically probably wouldn't exactly make me happy. I can't see myself enjoying a life where I have conquered all challenges, defeated all foes.

But if you are not happy are you successful?

Success stems from how other people view you. Happiness stems from how you view yourself. Go with happiness.

Isn't the goal of success aimed at increasing one's own happiness?

Happines means for me to get rid of all the unwanted liabilities in my life. But is that possible together with success?
Success is for me to fullfill jobs to reach a goal (more money, more power, more influence). In a long term goal this is always conflicting with problems or mistakes (and that definitely makes me unhappy). If you have made it you feel happy for a short while but then the fight starts again to keep your influence, money and power or to gain a new goal.

Happiness is only partially part of success.

Happiness is enjoying the now.
Success is comparing the now with other things. And when you're busy comparing, you ain't busy enjoying.

I think happiness is one of many goals in life. I think we pursue success partly in the belief that it will increase our happiness. But we do other things for other reasons eg love, or a sense of duty or righteousness, even when we do not believe they will bring us happiness.

I think the desire to be successful is not entirely driven by a desire for happiness. We do not eat to be happy, we eat because we are hungry. We try to be successful not just because we think it will make us happy, but because we feel a desire to be successful, and we don't necessarily rationalize where that desire stems from, we just act on it.

We do not eat to be happy, we eat because we are hungry.

You should rethink this. Many people (the vast majority of overweight people as well as many who are not) eat for reasons other than hunger such as for pleasure and/or to relieve anxieties other than hunger.

We try to be successful not just because we think it will make us happy, but because we feel a desire to be successful, and we don't necessarily rationalize where that desire stems from, we just act on it.

The desire for success stems from the desire for pleasure and/or to relieve anxiety. This is true for almost all desires.
