It was only recently I learned that Taiwan started to leave the constraints of military rule in 1987, and that they had their own "White Terror" as severe as the one Stalin imposed on the writers and intellectuals in Russia circa 1937 and after.
1987 was only 35 years ago. This relatively recent change from (maybe understandable in historical context) military rule to democracy must be a factor underlying the young generation's support for gay rights and freedom of being and expression in general (well, of course within reasonable bounds).
Of course, certain Western states, partitioners of China, had nothing at all to do with this situation.
