In America if you kiss a girl or hold her hand in public you will not be lynched. In America you are free to shave your beard. In America after a long day of work you are free to have a beer, or a glass of wine. In America you can feel free to listen to whatever type of music you want, or Howard Stern if it appeals to you. American women are free to decide how much or how little clothes they wear. How is America oppressive? do tell.
Originally posted by CanadaguyIn the US, there are over a million arrests per year for marijuana possession. A good number of those people go to jail and in some states, prison. They probably get more of a punishment than a guy who wouldn't shave his beard under the Taliban. Oppression comes in a lot of different shades and before one society claims the moral high ground to invade, kill and then change the government of another country because that government is toooooooooo "oppressive", they should at least have their house in order freedom-wise, don't ya think?
Sure why not. Just as long as its in the privacy of your own home. Personally I'll never touch crack, boad voodoo there. But in Canada its almost expected to smoke pot.
that's YOUR cherished legal system at work ... and re the Taliban:

""They (Taliban) jail for 45 days those people who shave their beards in addition to awarding seven lashes to those who trim their beard," the Afghan refugee said. "
(that was 1998)
(side note: here is a page with html title "Comparing Taliban & Al-Qaeda to Cults": http://wellspringretreat.org/journal/taliban/taliban.html)
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Taliban
"On September 22, 2001, with the U.S. blaming bin Laden and his hosts, the Taliban, for the September 11, 2001 attacks, the United Arab Emirates and later Saudi Arabia withdrew their recognition of the Taliban as the legal government of Afghanistan, leaving neighboring Pakistan as the only remaining country with diplomatic ties. When threatened with retributive attack by the US for harboring Al Qaeda, the Taliban government offered to turn over Osama bin Laden to a neutral country for war crimes trial, but was ignored by the United States. It offered again two weeks later, getting increasing coverage in the International media.
24 hours later the U.S., aided by the United Kingdom and supported by a coalition of other countries including the NATO alliance, initiated military action against the Taliban, in October 2001. The stated intent was to remove the Taliban from power because of the Taliban's refusal to hand over Osama bin Laden for his involvement in the September 11 attacks, and in retaliation for the Taliban's aid to him.
