Well, the UN climate top in Glasgow ended in a bit of a downer.
Before the conference countries had pledged a reduction to 52.2 giga tonnes of greenhouse gasses. During the conference they’ve managed to lower it to 41.9 gt by 2030.
That sounds like quite a win. Alas, they needed to get it down to 26.6 gt or less.
So, the consequences are that the expected temperature rise will be 1.8 to 2.5 degrees by 2100.
And that’s not very good. This means more and harder storms, more extreme weather, massive heat waves (which are gonna make city life attrocious), more wild fires and more droughts.
Oh, and no North pole ice: smaller islands and low lying areas in countries will disappear, along with the coral reefs (I don’t know why coral reefs will disappear, but hey, what do I know?).
Have the politicians failed us?
This was their chance to protect life on the planet as we know it and they couldn’t manage it. Pretty moronic considering the science.
My take-away from this debacle of stupidity is that protester who glued his face to the road (see youtube link).
“It wasn’t one of my better moves.”
Oh really?

@shavixmir saidIt makes sense. Global warming means the average ocean temp is going up and the coral reefs are already dying due to increased exposure to UV light due to the protective ozone layer going away. This is bleaching the reefs white because the coral is dying off.
(I don’t know why coral reefs will disappear, but hey, what do I know?).
They're not actually disappearing like a magic trick -- they're just dying and leaving their skeletons behind. The top layer of many reefs are already devoid of live coral.
Plus they die during storms, the boxing day tsunami destroyed a lot of coral in Asia, a lot of factors but like everything it was never going to be around forever but like everything the actions of humans have speeded the destruction process up quite considerably. Shame, little joys better in life than snorkelling amongst coral and seeing different species of marine life.
Cop26 was just for show, when it boils down to it people are generally selfish and with an increasing population, increase need for water, electric, food etc etc, the earth is screwed. Soon the world will be just one big massive plastic island anyway.
@contenchess saidWeather reflects short-term conditions of the atmosphere while climate is the average daily weather for an extended period of time at a certain location. it is difficult to predict in the short term, especially now that the climate is rapidly changing.
It's all them cow farts man!
🙄
How come they can predict the weather 80 years from now but they can't get the weather right 3 days from now?
@shavixmir humans are low on the list of creatures that are good at organizing efficiently to reach a goal. The best are invertebrates such as ants and certain bees. I was hoping the pandemic would help people realize they do not need to be hell bent on buying future landfill but that was not the case. I suspect soon masses of the religious, especially Christians, will claim it is God's plan. Sit back and let it happen. The good news is humans will be gone or at least enough of us so that our technology is severely disrupted. I suspect those left will develop a culture that equates science with evil and we will enter a new long dark age. Just look at many of the posters in this forum to see the sad future state of human culture. While many vertebrates, plants and perhaps fungi may go extinct, many invertebrates will be able to deal with the change. Life on the planet will not be entirely extinguished. It will be a very inhospitable place for our specie in less than a century.
@shavixmir saidHow does the failure of other countries like India and China square with an efforts of other countries to shut down carbon emissions.? Being pro capitalism and production and growth, reaping riches, I worry that if we do shut down the emissions, that they will become more advanced in those areas, surpassing the USA.

@averagejoe1 saidFirst, there is much money to be made investing in the development and marketing of green technology. Second, it will all be for naught if the planet is made uninhabitable. As rising seas and droughts push people to migrate, there will be more conflicts, wars. Stop being so simple minded, please.
