Its good to see that I'm not the only one influenced by the cult of personality! I watched his victory broadcast (all in French of which I understood absolutely zero) but just looking at the cut of his jib and his general demeanor so to speak, he comes across as being more a man of the people. He does not have the imperious air you would normally associate ...[text shortened]... one who would sweat pragmatism under pressure. More a professional than one to the manor born.
For you, Kmax87, I am absolutly horrified how wrong you perceived the things, having the excuse to not understand a word of french. Sarkozy is in fact very close to Sylvio Berlusconi concerning his approach of politics.
Sarkozy was born rich, has been raised has rich, has been the mayor of the richest important city (Neuilly) where all the important business is around Paris and he is the friend of most important industries leaders....He is going to favor the rich against the poor...His ideas: remove taxes on welth and inheritance but create a new salestaxe on bread and milk, to be sure that everyone pays it ('TVA sociale'😉! I don't think this is something someone close to the people would do!
Sarkozy is the son of a rich noble from Hungaria which had a huge Land where more than 2000 people were working for him. During WWII, he was part of the Nazis and so had to flea when the Russians arrived...So the sarkozy family has never been close to the people..
Las thing: the 1st things Sarkozy did after his election was to go to eat to the fanciest restaurant in Paris, with his rich friends and then flew to rest on a magnificient Floatting Palace ( a 60m long yacht) which belongs to one of his close rich friends making their fortune with the help of the government. Many newspapers in Europe (especially in belgium and Switzerland) thought that this is a political mistake. For my concern, I was not surprised at all, as I don't buy Sarkozy propaganda...

If you could speak French you'd hear why Sarkozy's program will lead to heavy government indebtness and hurt France's long-run growth.
Alternatively, you can read the Washington Times and have a completely biased view that uses all the anti-left cliches without actually looking at the proposals.
Originally posted by pruliereI did miss it and what my friend said is very close to what you have said. To view Sarkohzy as a new Blair would be a total mistake in his opinion. He viewed Sarkohzy more along the lines of a Thatcher. He also said that Sarkohzy won by the narrowest of margins largely because the left were not totally in support of Royale. Furthermore that Sarkohzy's apparent support of women is just a political ploy, he apparently has agreed to put women in 7 out of the 15 cabinet posts on offer, is more of a response to Royale's three month election campaign and the promises he had to make to convince the women of the French electorate.
Kmax47, please read my former post because I edited it and you may miss it.
Furthermore I am told that in the 5 years that Sarkohzy held a post in the Chirac administration, showing himself to be a tough guy with the way he deployed the police in the race riots sent a message that resonated among the elderly and the wealthy, that here was a man they could support. Also the would be nuovo riche love the thought of a man who will reduce their taxes and generally be behind business.
Also apparently against the trend of French politics which has generally recognized the plight and the rights of the Palestinians he has come out in unequivocal support of the Israeli's. He also seems to be taking up the agenda of right wing nationalists like Le Pen and his agenda to declare tighter controls of who can be considered French seems to strike at a seam of racist murmuring that has long simmered under the yoke of national responsibility for the sins of a long past colonial empire.
Edit: Sorkozy not Sarkohzy as referenced in this post, which makes him sound like Sock-hosy which sounds very burlesque with him shimmying and shaking and bumping and grinding to a very sordid 'money makes the world go round' tune.
