Pope warns Russian youth not to follow false idols of hedonism, drugs

Pope John Paul II warned Russian youths not to squander hard-won freedoms by following the false idols of hedonism and drugs.

VATICAN CITY (CNS) -- Pope John Paul II warned Russian youths not to squander hard-won freedoms by following the false idols of hedonism and drugs.

Do not allow the freedoms your dear nation has won back with the price of great sacrifice and suffering to be squandered away by giving in to false ideals, he said in a written message released Aug. 11 by the Vatican.

Many youths in Russia today are often distracted by the mirages of an easy and comfortable life, by the temptations of drugs and hedonism, often ending up as slaves to violence, meaninglessness and desperation, he said.

Young people need now more than ever to see other young people's
adical loyalty to Christ and the Gospel, he said.

The pope's remarks came in a written message for an Aug. 11-15 nationwide gathering of Catholic young people in Russia's Siberian city of Irkutsk.

The meeting, promoted by the nation's bishops, was part of Russia's preparations for World Youth Day 2005 next August in Cologne, Germany.

What on earth is wrong with taking drugs?

Since when has anyone on marijuana been seen to be violent?
"Hey you!"
"Who me?"
"Well...yeah...hihihih...want some chocolate."

It just doesn't happen!

Since when has anyone on marijuana been seen to be meaningless?
"Look at the tree man. It's got branches. They're swaying the wind man...whooo whoooo whoooo. I wish I was a tree."

See. Even swaying branches have meaning to stoned people!

Since when has anyone on marijuana been seen to be desperate?*
"Yeah. I really want to go out and party tonight. Oh wait. No. That was yesterday...when I was drunk!. Today I just wanna chill. Yeah. That's cool."

See stoned people aren't desperate

*Obviously there can be a certain amount of desperation if you're stoned and someone puts on the Eagles or Cliff Richard. Or if there's no chocolate around.

And I need to see other young people's adical loyalty to christ and the gospel as much as RBHILL wants to go surfing with me on the fires of hell with AC/DC's "Hell ain't such a bad place to be" rockin' in the background!

And that goes for when I'm stoned, drunk or sober!

Doesn't marijuana OPEN your mind?
Is that why they're so against it?

Yes an excellent point John (sarcasm), convincing people not to follow false idols.... kinda shot himself in the foot there, how can he expect anyone to follow his false idols now!!!
