Let's give nations a Machoness value from 1-10. This measures the "toughness", "fighting spirit" etc of the nation. It's about attitude, not technology.
The French as seen from a stereotypical American conservative perspective would have a 1. I'm not saying they ARE a 1, but that gives you a reference point. Israel and Iran might be 10s (or maybe not; you tell me).
I'll give my country, the USA, an 8.

Originally posted by Bosse de NageI think surrendering in like 6 weeks was a pretty weak response. That qualifies as getting pushed around. As for the French resistance, we can't give them credit for that without also giving the British credit for their part in helping the French Resistance. That and there was as many French that helped the Nazi as there was that resisted.

Originally posted by MerkExcept De Gaulle didn't surrender and carried on fighting. So, the incumbent government was rubbish, but you can't extend the criticism to all the French. Like Chamberlain got pushed around in Munich, Churchill didn't.

There were Nazi sympathisers in every occupied country. I'll bet there were royalists among the yankees in revolutionary times too.
Originally posted by Bosse de NageI'm sorry. France surrendered. France got pushed around.

There was once a time when France could rightfully call itself brave.
Originally posted by Bosse de NagePffff....De Gaulle. The entire French nation took to German occupation like a duck to water and happily collaberated with them. Then, after they were liberated, EVERY FRENCHAN over the age of 12 was suddenly a member of "le resistance' and had been a undercover freedom fighter, while they bravely shaved the heads of women that consorted with German soldiers.

But they let Maurice Chevalier and other entertainers off the hook alright. He entertained German troops all through the occupation.
As far as English loyalists in the American revolution, yes, in fact a majority of the colonists remained loyal to England during the revolutionary war, a little known fact. It's a miracle they succeded.
