Another example is Mitt Romney. As a former GOP governor of a very liberal state, he offered the party a point of view that almost no one else could. If he had remained true to this, he might have had a chance in the GOP primary, or at least would have had influence over GOP policy and tone. But instead, he looked at the polls and tried to change himself to ...[text shortened]... " -- and I ended up feeling like I had no idea what Romney actually stood for. I still don't.[/b]
Indeed. It should illustrate how riding both sides of the fence will do nothing but sink you in the polls, or at least should.

ON SEPTEMBER 8TH, A CARE-A-VAN LEFT CROSS AMERICA TO DELIVER A CLEAR AND SIMPLE MESSAGE TO OUR ELECTED OFFICIALS IN WASHINGTON:
HEALTH CARE FOR PEOPLE - NOT PROFIT!

There is a time for compromise - this isn't one of them.
We are a small group of Oregon-Based doctors who care. We believe there is only one way to control costs, one way to remove profiteering from the system, one way to reclaim the care of our patients, and one way to be sure everyone is covered: we must replace our current pay-or-die system and with a comprehensive, publicly financed, privately delivered, Single Payer system that puts people first. Our moment to take a stand for Single Payer is NOW. We may not have another opportunity like this in our lifetime. Please support this unprecedented road trip to real health care reform.

1. Illegals as well as the uninsured cannot be turned away at an emergency room in the USA. That is law and also moral. Actually paying the bill is another matter.
2. Most illegals are actually paying taxes to the US government (sounds odd doesn't it) but receiving little to no benefits for paying taxes. They contribute more than they receive.
Our immigration laws are in need of change.

That is right. The helth care bill will provide even more incentive to hire illegal aliens and will increase unemployment for our fellow citezens. The illegals are our fellow humans, but it is up to them to stay home and have a revolution or whatever it is going to take to get their corrupt system fixed. I have to say our capitalist system doesn't smell to good right now. It can be fixed but not by any lawmakers elected now.

There is nothing moral about forcing those that have chosen a particular career into, there is no other word for it, slavery.

A person sets up a medical practice, he soon finds a steady stream of patients he cannot turn away although 99% are not going to pay, he must treat them 'out of his pocket' . He shuts up shop to become a plumber.

If it is 'moral' as you put it, then the doctor should be able to send them around to your door with the bill, you'd then have a chance to put your money where your mouth is.

So who should pay then? In fact, has anyone asked Obama this?

Why, when all that needs to be done is ignore the laws on the books?

I am one of those who are unemployed and still finding none. Since we live in a country where capitalism reigns and any attempt to improve the lot of the worker is answered by the ignorant call, "socialism", there is little to be done. After all, the greatest benefit to hiring illegals goes to the wealthy owners and stockholders of the businesses involved and the greatest harm is done to the legal workers who are unemployed or under employed. And big business simply "buys" what laws they desire. And the ,in general, ignorant public believes big business will act with our best interest. Perhaps the solutions to our dilemma can be found in a "melding" of capitalist and socialist ideas.

For decades it has been the taxpayer who foots this bill. Hospital taxes are adjusted to pay for this. A public healthcare program would in real terms reduce the burden on those who pay hospital taxes. A payroll tax of 8 per cent (like Social Security taxes) would provide a significant amount of revenue. By doing nothing we are hurting ourselves since we will all continue to pay and pay as it has been for decades. If these anti public healthcare people would intelligently examine the healthcare situation in the US they might see how fiscally foolish and easily manipulated they are. For starters, examine the Swiss healthcare system.

Are you saying that this goes on in countries like Switzerland, Germany, Britain, Japan, Taiwan or any of the other countries where national healthcare is provided ???
It would be better if people would base their opinions in this matter on facts not kneejerk reactions and scare tactics.

So if you were a Mexican, for example, and you needed health care that you could not obtain in Mexico, what would you do?
