A quote from Cliff Mashburn on the other Griner thread:
Is she the basketball player, the one that still won't stand for the National Anthem and badmouths the USA? That one?"
I don't know how the most obvious point about this debate escaped me.
The only reason there's any debate is because Griner's a black lesbian and seems liberal.
That's it.
If Griner was a white Trump supporter...would anyone be debating?
I would like the conservatives to answer honestly and not dodge answer this, with a direct yes or no: if a white female Trump supporter was the one swapped: would be upset with Biden?
I have a feeling that if Trump were president and a white conservative was in prison, this swap would be celebrated by Republicans. They'd cheer about how he brings Americans home.
And now for you left-wingers: Please answer honestly.
If it were Trump swapping a notorious criminal for someone like J.D. Vance...would you still be in favor of the prisoner swap? Don't treat this like a mere hypothetical, actually place yourself in a world where Trump were making such a trade. How would you feel? Would you be arguing that Trump made the right decision in letting a criminal go for Vance? Or for Stephen Miller?
All this time I'm trying to be Mr. "See both sides" when this is really just a partisan issue. Republicans only hate it because Biden made the swap. I'm pretty sure Dems would feel the same way if Trump made this trade for Marjorie Taylor Greene.
So after thinking about it more; I'm still glad Griner's back home. I don't know if it was the right choice...but it feels right.

@vivify saidWithout a doubt I would still feel the same, I didn’t know she was a lesbian till now and couldn’t care less, or know anything else about her. Yes I feel the sentence was extreme but you have to look at what’s on the other side of the scale. As far as Trump we wouldn’t be talking about this trade because it wouldn’t have happened. Would she still be released, yes through a more logical approach. The Harris/Biden approach made us look weak and stupid like most of their hand and hand decisions. I’m sure Russia is still laughing.

Trump promised to pardon all of the Jan 6th criminals. Republicans are happy with that. This proves my point.
Is this true, and if so how does this make you feel for what her release will end up costing in human lives period.

@vivify saidI was wondering when that switch was gonna flip for you. I kept waiting in the other thread.

@vivify saidThat was insurrection. They should all be in jail. They keep going on and on about the flag and sports figures kneeling during the national anthem. But they don't give a tinker's damn about the Constitution. If they did, Trump would have never been allowed to run again under the 14th Amendment.

@mike69 saidHow many lives do you think a second Trump administration is going to cost us? No matter your number, it will be a gross underestimation.

@vivify saidNo, Stephen Miller is an extremist who belongs in prison.
If it was Trump releasing Bout for Stephen Miller, would you still feel the same way about the prisoner swap?
There is no "see the other side" here. Griner's just a basketball player. Miller is guilty of conspiracy to break the law to replace a duly elected president (yes, a coup) with a lying con man.
Might as well ask if I'd release him for Jeffrey Dahmer. Same answer, no.

@no1marauder saidNever heard of this. Probably because Republicans won't criticize Trump and Dems won't attack him for bringing Americans back.

But this highlights the point: there would be no debate if Griner was someone Republicans cared about.
All this time I thought it was a utilitarian debate, weighing the potential harm of releasing someone who delivers weapons to terrorists vs. releasing someone sent to a penal colony for an extremely minor offense.
Nope. It's just Republicans screaming about something they wouldn't have if Trump did it. Or wouldn't care about if Griner was a white woman.
For the record, you were right. It's better that the trade was made.
