The origin of AIDS revealed? First person ever infected with HIV was a starving World War One soldier who caught the virus in Cameroon while hunting chimps, expert claims

In the acclaimed first edition of his book 'Origin of AIDS', published in 2011, Dr Pepin concluded HIV likely infected a hunter in Cameroon at the start of the 20th century, before spreading to Léopoldville, now known as Kinshasa in the Congo.

Surely worth a quick read. Professor Jacques Pepin has some substantial evidences that point to Dutch soldiers, cut off from supply lines, going into neighboring Cameroon to hunt for monkeys.

Not proof, perhaps, but, the most plausible scenario I have seen.

What were Dutch soldiers doing over there in WW1. And which supply lines?

Sounds mad to me.

Earl's synopsis is wrong; the soldiers weren't "Dutch" (the Netherlands was neutral in WWI) but supposedly part of a joint French, British and Belgian invasion force.

@divegeester
One theory has it they did not have sex, just consumed the monkeys which had the Aids virus and that was passed from monkeys to humans.

Did you read it? It was WWI. Dutch went in to attack German strongholds in Africa.
Supply lines (shipping) were cut off.

close.

the monkeys had SIV (simian), which mutated into HIV (human) upon human handling (consumption?)

my short-term memory sucks since getting COVID, and creeping old age does not help

I read a similar article somewhere (can't remember now where, yup, old age), which proposed the same hypothesis, that the virus jumped species from monkeys to humans. I believe the virus is still widespread among the monkey population.

COVID from bats. Jakob-Kreuzfeld from cows. Just serves to remind us we're part of nature, not above it.

The article claims it was caused by butchering the animal by a soldier with an open wound.

No they didn’t.
