Short-term speculation (not medium/long-term investment) is almost a zero-sum game. Such a surge in demand (without real underlying economic reasons for it) can easily lead to bubbles. All it takes is a moment of generalized pulling out from the market and, apart from the first movers, a large majority of them will lose a lot.
I hope I'm wrong, though.
