The UN can never work while countries have the veto vote.

1 nation (US) invades another (Panama), the world wants to condemn it, the same nation says no. World is silenced.
1 nation (Israel) commits numerous war crimes against others, the world wish to condemn these acts, this nation's protector (US) vetoes. World is silenced.
1 nation (USSR) invades ...[text shortened]... ever work with the Veto?

Shavixmir: " ....... the UN, the arse-licking-puppy puppet of the US, ..... "

Maybe Shavixmir can explain why he looks upon the UN that way ..... while at the same time the majority of the American right hates the UN for being anti-US ?

I don't believe the majority of Americans feel that way. Have any evidence of this?

Tell you what. I'll provide your evidence for you.

A comprehensive analysis of polls of the American public over the past decade, conducted by WorldPublicOpinion.org shows that the American public remains committed to a strong United Nations. Not only do Americans, like most other publics around the world, want their leaders to work within the United Nations to solve international problems, they also want the world body to take on additional powers, including regulation of the international arms trade and creation of a standing UN peacekeeping force.

Clearly the slimjims of the USA are in the minority. Fortunately.

As it happens the European left (.... well, actually not all of them really, maybe I should say the fundamentalist left) considers the UN a body which actively serves the interests of the United States.

As you all may know the American right looks at this international body e ...[text shortened]... oes anybody have any rational ideas which explain this apparently contradictory phenomenon ?
The problem, as far as I can see it, is that 5 nations have a veto on all important issues within the UN.

Considering that all five countries, Britain, the US, France, Russia and China are nuclear powers and four of them are the largest weapon exporting nations on the planet, means that many of their decisions and vetoes will be coloured in the same way.

Remove the veto and the UN will function much better.
You can't have Iraq invaded without a second UN resolution, but Israel disregarding 250 UN security council resolutions.

Another problem is various countries in the UN not signing up to all its charters.
For instance, the US hasn't signed up to the international bill of children's rights. The reason they declined is that they want to be able to give children (in hindsight) a death penalty.

Obviously, having a body like the UN means that all countries lose a certain amount of soverign power. Lots of people don't like that concept (although the basic idea was to stop large scale wars with millions of civilians suffering), which I can understand. The main reason being that it's difficult to steer a body like the UN through voting (as a citizen). In comparison to national elections, however, this is totally bogus, because you can't really steer the direction of a government either.

I think the concept of the UN is a great idea. It's a pity it's disabled by the afore mentioned reasons.

But, I certainly wouldn't do away with it.

Another good idea gone bad.

It's broke.

Take all your stuff and go home, fix yourself first, then come back.

No more penthouses in NYC, No more high class NY hookers, lobster or fine champagna. No more free parking .. anywhere you want. No more diplomatic immunity .. just take your stuff and go home.
UN people don't have diplomatic immunity. They are not supposed to be prosecuted for acts committed while legitimately performing their duties, but they also sign contracts that they will abide by the laws of the country in which they serve in addition to the policies of the UN.
