It's the economy, and people are not quite as stupid as they might appear.
Folks who have their heads even semi-screwed on realize that McCain is not exactly Dr. Regulation as he now claims. Makes him look rather foolish to even try to say so -- or desperate.
I don't like either of them, so this isn't an endorsement or a celebration.
But from where I sit here in Washington DC, the buzz is pretty loud and clear: this election is over.

Politically speaking, it is clear that he is more astute than Obama. Attribute it to experience if you wish. The choosing of the Vice President is a prime example. Obama chose Biden who has zero appeal in terms of charisma and is really at odds with Obama's appeal which is the image of "change". Instead he chose a Washington insider like Biden who made a very poor showing when he ran for the Presidency earlier. In comparison, McCain chose a woman who was young and energetic and charismatic. Now going strictly by the polls, McCain came out on top of the affair despite the continuous assault on Palin whether it be substantiated or not. In addition, McCain inserted himself into this whole economic crisis, which according to the polls, gave him yet another boost in the polls. Now as far as how this will all pan out, we shall see but to this point McCain is playing his opponent politically.
One thing is for certain and that is that the current Congress has lower approval ratings that "W"!! Now that's pretty bad. What McCain has done in response is chosen an outsider who claims to be a reformer in comparison to Biden who is business as usual. In addition, he has thrown himself in this debate about the economy and last I checked he has objected to many of the provisions that are inside it but continues to work with the Dems. What is important to note, however, is that the majority of Americans object to the bail out so perhaps McCain is positioning himself once again to come out on top of the whole affair?

But regardless, your first example of McCain being more savvy politically is his selection of a running mate? How savvy is it to declare the economy sound days before it burst into flames??

Please cite a poll that said McCain has been helped by his sudden refusal to debate until he solves the economic "crisis". Every poll I've seen says that somewhere around 75-80% of the voters want the debate to go on as scheduled Friday. McCain's put himself in a pickle; if no bailout is enacted by Friday night (which is very likely), he'll either have to go back on his promise or skip the debate which the overwhelming number of Americans don't want. Either way he loses.
Your brain works in strange ways. McCain aggressively SUPPORTS the bailout; the majority of people OPPOSE it. How the hell is that going to help him???????? What's more, McCain's previous record of supporting deregulation in the financial industry is now well known and has led to him sinking in the polls. Obama now has a huge advantage on the "who will better handle the economy" question. Your wishful thinking is bizarre and laughable.

The first thing I thought when I saw Palin was "style over substance". Such a cynical ploy to appeal to those who wanted some female input into the higher echelons of US politics after Hilary got beaten.
The Republicans chose Palin against McCain's wishes & have probably regretted the decision ever since.
You now have a cheat/liar as potential President (see Thread 100096) backed by an almost equally shady VP.
Congratulations!

I think his play now will be to inject himself into the fray as if he were a Washington outsider to try and weed out the legislation to make it more appealing to tax payers as where Obama is silently waiting on the side lines hoping he will at least show up for their next scheduled debate.
I think it beneficial for McCain to play himself against Congressional whims simply because their approval rating is lower than "W"'s. At least, that is what I think he is doing.

What does matter is the general perception just like the public giving Obama a free pass on being qualified to be President even though he was only a community organizer and a Senator for about a minute. Having said that, the polls show that the majority of Americans like Palin. Had it not been for the problem with the economy Obama would be behind in the polls.

You need to get out of your fantasy world.
EDIT: Here's what the Fox news poll says if you don't like the other ones:
Voters More Comfortable with Biden Stepping in as President
More voters would be comfortable with Joe Biden as vice president as would be comfortable with Sarah Palin in that role. Some 40 percent would be “extremely” comfortable or “very” comfortable with Biden as vice president, while 34 percent would be with Palin.
Similarly, when the question asks what if it were necessary for the vice president to step in and serve as president: 44 percent would be “extremely” or “very” comfortable with Biden as president, and 32 percent with Palin.
The big difference comes at the other end of the scale: 38 percent of voters say they would be “not at all” comfortable with Palin stepping in to serve as president — more than twice as many as say the same about Biden (17 percent).
Palin’s favorable rating has dropped a bit and now stands at 47 percent, down from 54 percent two weeks ago. Nearly half of voters — 48 percent — have a favorable view of Biden, down from 51 percent (September 8-9).

Having said that, picking her was a big gamble just as McCain threatening to stay out of the debate is a big gamble. However, when someone is behind in the polls that is what must be done. As for Obama, he can just sit back and wait unless he starts to fall back in the polls and then it will be time for him to gamble a bit. I think the clincher will be how the economy is doing later on during the election.
To be honest though, the main reason she was picked was to sure up the religious right vote and I think she has done that. Additionally, if someone like Dan Quail and all his misquotes can become Vice President I don't see why Palin can't do the same. In fact, she seems to be more liked than Quail.
As far as Biden goes, however, I simply think he was a mistake in that he could have just done better.
