Someone should tell this gumba that America is the continent,
and in America more people speak Spanish than English.

James Coomarasamy, the creator of this opinion piece, is quite condescending to Joey Vento. This man has made a life for himself, isn't living off of the government and Jimmy feels the need to make fun of him.

Why would anyone expect to be able to order food in a language that the worker can not understand. I have spanish speaking folks come into may place of work all the time. If they can not speak english what am I supposed to do? I tell them, as best I can, to bring someone who can. The person they normally bring is a elementary grade son or daughter, which is fine by me. I should not be expected to learn languages just to run a business in my english speaking country. I also have alot of Hmong customers as well... same rules apply.

I dont need a sign that says "order in english only" they know by the look on my face that I have NO idea what they are saying.

I've ordered food in Israel, Italy, France, Spain, Germany, Thailand, India, Romania, etc.

And I don't speak any of their languages. Never had a problem yet.
The odd animal noise, pointing at the menu and motioning that I'm thirsty generally solves any lingual hang-ups.

The mere idea that you need a language to order food is appalling!

I hear that in Texas grunting and pointing is the pinnacle of scholarly discourse.

So what? Do you think everyone should start speaking Spanish instead? English is the language of commerce and international politics so who cares how many people speak Spanish? They don't matter.

I live just N of the Cali/Mex border and deal (literally) with non-english speaking people all day long.

My Spanish is getting better everyday.
No choice and, no problem. I flunked out of Spanish 1 in the 7th grade; cheated off the redhead for about 2 weeks, fell behind and never caught up. In other words .. I cheated myself.

I deal poker in a Casino. Many of the players are Mexican, some Vietnamese, Chinese, a few Persians and assorted Arabs.
Some of these don't speak any english at all yet still manage to communicate and function in the invironment.
The rest of the players are a mix of average, everyday Americans, lots of Sailors, Marines, retired military and College kids.
Everytime I work I see these people sit around a table at close quarters, play a game, eat, dtink, laugh, piss and moan.
Makin' friends.
We all manage to communicate, we all pick up a little multi-culturalism by osmosis.
That's a good thing IMO

The non-english speaking aspect has it's merits too.

Often I have no idea what kind of name they're calling me when I dust 'em off on the river.
..................

Lot's of 1st generation Americans never learn english. They're too busy working 2 or 3 jobs. There children will pick it up quickly .. and teach there parents.😀😀

Hey, people, don't get too touchy on this, specially you, SplatGrotch...

Americans have the right to do in their country what they want, I just
wanted to point out that the continent is called 'America' and that
guy of the restaurant, before getting touchy feely with linguistic
matters, should use language well.

PLus, if I had a restaurant, I would try to speak even Swahili if that
would bring money to my business 😉

You got the essence, man!

Mexico and Finland are the smartest governments, at least during
a certain era. Urho Kekonen in Finland was so clever that he coined
the term 'Finlandization': To bend over to Russia but not so much
so not to moon at the West 🙂

Being a Mexican is a delicate matter, man. You must please the U.S.
without appearing so bended.

🙂
