Who elected the people at the EPA? Where does their "authority" come from? A bureau the american people have no control over is now going to regulate industry.

§202(a)(1) of the Clean Air Act (passed by Congress and signed by the President in 1970) provides that EPA “shall by regulation prescribe . . . standards applicable to the emission of any air pollutant from any class or classes of new motor vehicles or new motor vehicle engines, which in [the Administrator’s] judgment cause, or contribute to, air pollution which may reasonably be anticipated to endanger public health or welfare.”

Any other questions?

Supreme court judges are appointed by Presidents. They are supposed to make judgements about this and that...any other questions??

Welcome to the fourth branch of government!! Isn't it wonderful?

It is my guess that one day members of Congress need not even show up for work.

So just to clarify here, the first six responders are okay with agencies acting unilaterally without the approval of congress? Suppose the TSA decided everyone named Mohammed or any variant thereof should receive extra screening at airports?

As a sidenote, it's funny to me that the people who are okay with this are the same ones complaining about the rich getting richer. Who do you think these rules will hurt the most? The utility companies will pass the cost right on down the line.

Do you really think every single government employee should be elected? Or what exactly do you mean by "approval of Congress"? Doesn't Congress already have the authority to cease most government activity?

Of course not. We're not talking about a park ranger, this is a whole agency. They have the power (as no1 pointed out) to act without the approval of congress. Essentially, they can pass laws without going through the normal process. To be honest, I don't know whether congress could overrule the EPA or not.

I think you will find that in the eyes of those who have posted thus far, the federal government is not capable of any wrong......unless they are a Republican.

Right. They're chosen by Presidents. Just like those dratted folks working in the upper echelons of the EPA. So...there you go.

Isn't the EPA just enforcing the Clean Air Act? And wasn't the Clean Air Act enacted by congress?

This was in fact pointed out already, but it appears lost on the author of this thread.

So, I guess the "unbelievable" part is that the EPA is actually doing what it supposed to be doing. See, I thought he meant it in a bad way.
