One has been shot down off the east coast

It either communicates or is intended to be retrieved. You can jam communications and if it has some sort of quantum communicator it can be captured and studied.

Doesn't seem to be much of a threat.

Whatever info it got, was immediately sent back to China.

Waiting a week to shoot it down is a bit late.

it was. indeed late. You see, there are two issues here. The safety of people on the ground who can't avoid the balloon,,and, AND,,,the security of this country. A no brainer, they should have X'd it over Montana.
Security is the FIRST constitutional requirement of your government.
Or, at least it used to be, until the parasitic collectivist marxist mob showed up.

I said it and I'm glad!

How is it able to hover over an area for days when it's in the Jetstream?
If it was a spy balloon don't you think they would have camouflaged the balloon? White and black. Yeah, real stealthy. No attempt to hide it. Like a weather balloon.

I find it hard to believe China is that stupid. My guess is that it really was a weather balloon. If so, the Chinese are probably getting a good laugh over how paranoid my government is.

@JJ-Adams - "... they could put anything in them.
Like nukes or aerosol virus/germ warfare dispensers."

yes, and this is a good reason not to shoot it down until it has left US air space
or we would be doing the dispensing of such weapons for them.

Some things still remain unresolved.

How come the Chinese did not warn the Canadians (and the US) of the coming balloon?
and how come the Chinese did not shoot the balloon down as it was escaping?

And now, we have yet another Chinese "weather balloon" that has escaped China and is over Latin America.

They're actions are a bit suspicious. IMO.

There is a weather balloon treaty? LOL!
Stop making me laugh!

NONE of this would have happened under Trump. And had it, he would have pushed the button when it was over Alaska/
He warned them to not mess with us over his term, and they were scared of him. Note that all y'all are saying, in effect, that China was really casual abut invading our skies. Not scared of Biden?

It may have been fitted with maneuvering thrusters aboard.

Prove you can do effective spying at 60,000 feet.
The Chinese are not allowed to experiment with weather balloon size to carry heavier sensitive instruments for measuring the atmosphere? I think you have a regulated balloon size conspiracy theory. Tell me who made these balloon size rules?

Another conspiracy theory. Where is your evidence?

I can't figure you out, MetalB
Sometimes I think you are right on and are correct, other times you sound like a gigantic dooosh.
This is one of those times.
