In Syria, the US was hiring mercenaries to fight Assad, in direct opposition to Russia who is allied with Assad. The US had no intention of fighting IS and al Nursra's Brigade, nor the Syrian insurgents. America goes against Assad because Israel is against Assad.
Also, Trump got troops out of Idlib, leaving Syrian backed Russian troops to go in and do the dirty work.
Also, when Trump first took office, he got rid of Obama regulations on fracking which made oil more plentiful and lowered the cost of oil, which really hurt the energy driven Russian economy.
Yes, and I forgot, the sanctions the US put on Russia, too. And when England sent Russian embassy personnel home (Skripel?) the US did too.

American soldiers shot and killed 100+ Russian mercenaries in Syria. Also, Russia moved into the oil fields in northeast Syria that are being protected by the US. The US Troops demanded that the Russians leave and they did.
