The identities of officers is important for accountability and internal affairs issues, e.g. the officer is found to have himself violated the law while in uniform, or has violated a sworn oath to the people who pay his salary to protect and serve them.

Officers haven't needed masks until now. Actually, they don't need masks now, they wear them anyways because no one is left to tell them not to. There are psychology studies where people are more likely to commit crimes if they think no one will find out or hold them accountable. It's in the playbook of fascist governments.

I would want someone in law enforcement comfortable enough to understand the law and protect the people who pay his salary. Those people don't need masks.
