The world's most powerful earthquake in 40 years struck deep under the Indian Ocean off the west coast of Sumatra on Sunday, triggering tidal waves up to 20 feet high that obliterated villages and seaside resorts in six countries across southern and southeast Asia. About 8,000 people were killed in the devastation.
That is a conservative toll till now and the casualty figures are rising with many missing.
Is this too an effect of global warming. There seem too many natural calamaties over last one year.A sign that perhaps that the situation seems to be getting out of hand?.I think it is time for the world to really pull up its socks on reducing global emissions. And no dodging around the issue by moronic leaders who say it is not in their national interest to reduce emissions and then start pulling out of international treaties.

This is a major tragedy, a reminder of our helplessness against nature.

It seems this underwater earthquake created a giant wave of 30feet high which washed out all the costal areas. And so far over 8500 were feared death and over 3200 in India alone. In Chennai where I live a giant wave washed out all the morning walkers and the residential areas near coast. So far in the city over 125 are feared death with still the fisherman unaccounted for.
Originally posted by druidraviNo, global warning just doesn't have anything to do with seismological activity.

It can cause tidal waves, eg if a big lump of ice falls into the sea with a gigantic splosh. But not seismological phenomena.
Religious zealots in NZ are already at it. Some are claiming, in this time for compassion, that its a war between Alah & God, and God's winning. They are saying that Indonesia, as the largest Muslim country had it coming (the horrendoous tidal wave) because the terrorists of Osama Bin Laden all follow Allah.

Also it's Allah and horrendous.

Wildlife officials in Sri Lanka have reported that, despite the loss of human life in the Asian disaster, there have been no recorded animal deaths.
Do animals have a "sixth sense" to warn them for such disasters ?
octopus sunbaking?

No, global warning just doesn't have anything to do with seismological activity.

certainly that crust between them must be afffected when either changes significantly.
that said ... serious earthquakes are a reality of life on this planet.
richter 9 is not that unusual when you look across the decades and centuries.
massive death tolls are not unusual either.
100,000 or even 1,000,000 is not outside of our history.
given our huge human population at the moment ... 10,000,000 can be expected one day.
Originally posted by ivanhoeThe death toll (which is now over 125 thousand, that 8,000 figure certainly WAS conservative) was greatly increased by people's curiosity. People went to look when there was a smaller wave and then the sea receded further than normal. There were reports of people going to collect the fish that were beached.

The end result was there were more people in danger when the main wave hit. I don't know about a sixth sense, but I imagine wild animals would either have been less curious or got the hell out of there when odd things started to happen.
Originally posted by flexmoreThe energy involved in geological movements completely dwarfs any atmospheric phenomenon. The oceans are somewhat more massive, but still nowhere near the mass of the crust, never mind the mantle. I can't see how global warming would have any significant consequences in the form of earthquakes and volcanoes.
