Auschwitz, situated in southern Poland, was liberated by Soviet troops on January 27, 1945, in their drive toward Germany to join Allied forces in defeating Nazi Germany. Between 1.1 million and 1.5 million Jews were gassed to death or died from Nazi scientists' experiments there.

Interestingly enough, Auschwitz and Birkenau started off as slave camps for communists, mainly Russian and Polish.

As the nazi's started mass executions of 'their sworn enemy' they quickly discovered that bullets cost too much and having their soldiers face to face with the commies they were shooting was bad for morale.
So, they started experimenting with different methods of extermination.

Zyklon-B seemed to be the most cost-effective and was continually used on communists through to 1942. It wasn't 'till then that they started gassing Jews in either of these camps.

No part of me has anything but sympathy for anyone who suffered there, but I have a special place in my heart for our comrades who tend to be forgotten.
And let's be honest, it wasn't just commies and Jews that were stuffed away in these camps: gays, gypsies and anyone else the bastards didn't like.

I made a visit to these camps in 2003. I wasn't prepared for quite how upsetting this would be. A permanent memorial to how low the human race can reach.

I agree Ivanhoe it is something that should never be forgotten.

[1] In my distress I cried unto the LORD, and he heard me.
[2] Deliver my soul, O LORD, from lying lips, and from a deceitful tongue.
[3] What shall be given unto thee? or what shall be done unto thee, thou false tongue?
[4] Sharp arrows of the mighty, with coals of juniper.
[5] Woe is me, that I sojourn in Mesech, that I dwell in the tents of Kedar!
[6] My soul hath long dwelt with him that hateth peace.
[7] I am for peace: but when I speak, they are for war.
