Facebook, Bebo and MySpace 'to be monitored by security services'

The private correspondence of millions of people who use social networking sites could be tracked and saved on a “big brother” database, under new plans being drawn up by the UK government.

Ministers revealed yesterday that they were considering policing messages sent via sites such as MySpace and Facebook, alongside plans to store information about every phone call, e-mail and internet visit made by everyone in the United Kingdom.

There was immediate uproar from opposition parties, privacy campaigners and security experts who said the plans were over-the-top and unworkable.

There have long been proposals, following an European Union directive in the wake of the July 2005 bombings in London, for emails and internet usage to be tracked in order to guard against future terrorist attacks.

If the goal is to guard against terrorist attacks then this is utterly foolish.

That is just an excuse, Gordon brown is doing this because he enjoys when some data goes missing.

If the new laws and regulations are supposed to be ,anti-terrorist'' why are they being used by the Police and authorities as an excuse to harrass people who are clearly not terrorists?

Whilst the story was in a tabloid, I suspect the bulk of the report is true. Apparently, fisherman who use lasers during the night to frighten away ducks can now be arrested for terrorist activities.

And, whatever you do, American tourist or not, do not take a 'photo of a 'friendly' British bobby - you will be, ipso facto, guilty of a terror crime.

At a conference of the ruling party, a delegate (in his 70s, if I recall) heckles a government minister and is hauled from the conference by the police and held under anti-terrorism laws.

Is this a conference of Saddam's Baath party? Maybe the soviet union? Nope, this was the conference of Brown's labour party.

Could have equally been at a meeting of 'Godless Commies'.

the dood with the shoe was sentenced to several years in jail. for throwing a shoe at a foreign official. i am curious to how that trial went. were they concern the americans would invade iraq if the shoe guy wasn't imprisoned for many years(coz the country is already invaded). where they labelling the attack under terrorist attacks? under attempt at assassination? and the shoe didn't even reach its target, the least they could have done is indict the "criminal" with attempted shoeattack.

the world be gone crazy.

"Harass"? They're taking information, not harassing.
