A UN general assembly committee has backed a proposal to ban all forms of human cloning. The "nonbinding statement" - proposed by Honduras, backed by the US and carried by 71 votes to 35 with 43 abstentions - will now go before the full UN assembly, Reuters reports. The decision comes at the end of four years' heated debate into the matter.

The issue of human cloning, or cloning of human embryos to obtain stem cells, is deeply divisive.

No.

To perfect it, lots of clones would be allowed to grow a little, and then destroyed.

Depends what you mean by human cloning. Cloning a full human being would be unethical and sure, I'd welcome a ban on that. But cloning a human embryo, taking it through a few rounds of cell division and extracting embryonic stem cells... well there's nothing wrong with that in my book. It's already being done here in the UK and frankly I would be absolutely furious if other countries' outdated religious ethics were imposed upon us in order to stop it. There's more than a suspicion that those countries which have banned the creation of human embryonic stem cell lines are trying to end their production elsewhere to prevent countries with more relaxed legislation from gaining an economic advantage.

Rich.

So long as there's an absolute ban on cloning Bible-thumping morons, I see nothing wrong with human cloning.

There are many non-religious people who are anti-cloning and Pro-Life. They use philosophical and scientific reasoning to present their case.

Well, go ahead and present a case as to why we shouldn't allow human cloning. I'm all for it; it would mean there could be thousands of people just like me, Ivanhoe; wouldn't that be grand?
