Doesn't seem from the couple of article I read on this like he denied anything; but merely had the temerity to defend a political dissident.

Arrest in Rwanda

Erlinder was arrested on May 28th, in the Rwandan capitol[6][7][8][9]. He is currently defending opposition leader Victoire Ingabire against the same charge which he now faces, a law prohibiting "Genocide Ideology" - critical speech of the official version of the 1994 Rwandan Genocide.[10][11] The Republic of Rwanda has issued a statement[12] that claims that Erlinder "continually engaged in conspiracy theories and denial surrounding the circumstances of the genocide [and] has promulgated this dangerous and distorted fiction over many years". This statement claims that he was arrested for allegedly denying the Rwandan Genocide, and accuses him of links to FDLR. Police spokesman Eric Kayiranga claims that Erlinder said that "no Tutsis were killed by Hutus" [13]. His defense of clients accused of genocide included the argument "that the Tutsis were not the primary victims but the instigators and that the massacres were actually part of a civil war"[14].

The story is attracting significant media attention. The National Lawyers Guild has called for his immediate release.[15] William Mitchell College has stated their solidarity with Erlinder.[16]

Rwanda: No Conspiracy, No Genocide Planning ... No Genocide?

by Prof. Peter Erlinder

Global Research, January 24, 2009
JURIST - 2008-12-23

JURIST Guest Columnist Peter Erlinder of William Mitchell College of Law and a Lead Defense Counsel at the International Criminal Tribunal for Rwanda (ICTR), says that if - as the ICTR recently ruled in the "Military I" trial - alleged "masterminds" Colonel Theoneste Bagosora and fellow top Rwandan military officers engaged in no conspiracy and no planning to kill ethnic civilians, the tragedy that engulfed Rwanda in 1994 may not properly be called a "genocide" at all...

Do you believe that someone should face arrest just because they express an opinion that is extremely unpopular or outrageous?

Would you support jailing Americans who deny the existence of the Holocaust?

if they travelled to Germany i think it would be OK for Germany to jail them. in the USA it wouldn't matter so much.

Malaysia had/has a policy of illegalizing hate speech / racial incitement. considering their history of riots, i think it was quite wise.

Unequivocal no and no.

Otherwise, Melanerpes, we could hold a vote (those of us here) and force you to SHUT UP because we don't like what you are saying.

The principle is exactly the same and it needs to be utterly rejected.
