How do Americans, Brits etc feel about their country being a close ally of the Uzbek government, and regimes like it, because they're apparently helping in the war on terror? If you really think we got rid of Saddam 'because he oppressed his people', look at some of the regimes we're enthusiastically supporting!

I think the British government's position was summed up when they got rid of our ambassador to Uzbekistan after he criticised the Uzbek government's use of torture to acquire evidence, and Britain's complicity in accepting such evidence, some of which seemed to be cooked up for the purpose of implicating the Uzbek government's opponents. From what I've heard, our ambassador's resignation was forced by the government launching a volley of false accusations at him, ranging from corruption to sleeping with prostitutes.

The real interesting challenge is to lay out a new and better foreign policy towards Uzbekistan.

Anybody any thoughts ?

First thing is for the USA to get out of bed with Karimov and remove their air base forthwith.

But I bet they don't.

Already having an air base there might help should the US need to invade.

Regime change in a country "knee deep in 4 star" over human rights abuses. Sounds familiar.

Not sure GWB would be too pleased with a true democracy in Uzbekistan though.

I may be out of line but my impression is that the base is their to protect the US oil pipe line which Russia didn't want them to have.
However the presence of the base at this time is being seen as supporting the dictatorship.
The US presence is helping their economy
Leave...

If I'm wrong say why
Don't suggest another invasion because Korea is next in line.....pick a number...
