Don't we kill each other enough in real life? Why do we have to kill each other in video games?!
Does it in anyway encourage violence?

Well, that's the main topic; but as much as anything this is just a ruse to get people to join a game I've come across (at least I'm being honest...): I need at least 12 players

Unfortuantely, video games have been linked with depression as well, though depending on what you look at, the reverse is strangely true as well. I guess it would depend on the circumstances...

in my opinion, madmen who go around killing people would have done it even if they hadn't played postal2 or counter-strike. they are imbalanced. so by this point of view, violence in games means nothing. one can vent in a carmaggedon game, or blow up with rocket launchers some opponents in unreal (preferably some friends in a lan game) without being a psycho. you vent and then you go on with your life (pathetic meaningless life - just kidding.) those that carry unreal in the real life are psychopaths. and don't need video games or any kind of violent games to go over the edge.
one more thing: you are an user on a chess site. this is a war game. 🙂 see my point? are you preparing by any chance for a killing spree? hope not.
