We ain't gonna give up our way of life , our DVDs or our cars for that matter. The world population is just going to grow and grow. We need loads of power. The only current technology capable of producing that power with limited CO2 is nuclear energy.
Can it be that the thing that the green movement campaigned against might save the world?
I could make a similar argument for hydrogen cars but that technology needs bringing on a bit. However, isn't it time we faced the facts.

-Removed-In the UK "what the masses want" seems to have little influence. The masses didn't wnat Iraq , many don't want Afghanistan and they certainly didn't want trillions spent to prop up bankers bonuses and bail them out.
I think if governments sold us a nuclear program on the basis that it could save the planet and help us keep our tumble dryers that might be quite cool with voters actually. At the end of the day many voters have children and grandchildren - what about their future?

Nuclear power is a good way to make cheap, clean power until nuclear fusion power becomes available (if it does). Also, the main producers of uranium (Canada, Australia, Kazakhstan) are all stable countries.
On a side note, people will definitely change their ways if power becomes more expensive, because saving power becomes a better investment.

Hydrogen is a fairly inefficient way of fueling cars. Electric cars are more efficient.
