Haven't you noticed ? Slowly, very slowly, the <Debates> forum is chanching into another <General> forum ......

What are your thoughts ?

Is it good or bad, happy or sad ?

it is another general forum. the only difference is that we are afforded the opportunity to argue a little heavier.

I disagree. What's happening is that the Debates forum has turned into the old General forum, seeing as General used to be crammed full of debates on religion and the like.

All we need now is a Cheese/Spam forum, where posts like 'the longest thread in RHP history' get sent. I don't think spam should be censored outright, but this might reduce the clutter on the other forums and give people space to post randomly without fear of reprisal. Oh, and a Jokes forum would be nice.

Maybe the moderators can help. They often move controversial posts from General to this forum, maybe they should move some of the wimpy debates to the General forum... Like this one! 😉

Would it be un-cool to "Alert Moderator" to a lame thread? I assume its to notify them of abusive or obscene postings, but this thread is so lame, it should be sent to the General forum. 😉

On page one of the "Debates" Forum I count three or four [if you want to add your thread called "Karma and the Strong Law of Large Numbers" to the category of "religion and the like"] threads with clearly religion related titles. Three (or four) !! Say there are three more threads that went astray and have also become "religion and the like" threads in effect. What's the big deal ? There are still more than twenty (TWENTY) non "religion and the like" threads.

Besides ..... who is keeping you from opening a thread with an interesting subject you want to discuss ?

Religion, politics, and philosophy are the best subjects for debate. If you don't want to debate religion, go to the Chess Only forum. The debate on chocolate vs. caramel was also very controversial! 😉

What's really interesting is finding threads with only one or two posts in the Debates forum to see why they died.

ivanhoe is right. If you want to get things going, pick a good subject and start a new thread. How about "toe jam vs. ear wax, which is better on toast".

so this is what it is coming to?

ok - i dare you to start and contribute a well argued and researched first post in that thread you suggested! 😀
i will make a special effort to return to read it, but refuse to contribute to it!

in friendship,
prad

ps your idea of sending some of the threads back for not being controversial enough is funny, but also probably good.

It was guarenteed to happen - whichever forum is the most popular is where people will post because they want their thread to be seen. This thread for example - it isn't a debate, it's a general question so belongs in the general forum.

My original suggestion when 'debates' was created was that no one could start a thread in the debates forum, that only threads that became heated could be moved into it. But did anyone listen...? 😛
