The good ole days some here yearn for?
@no1marauder saidI can recall a different image (which stuck with me in a deeper-than-literal sense) related to the issue of civil rights from high school history:

15-year-old Elizabeth Eckford tries to attend school in Little Rock, Arkansas, following Brown vs Board of Education. Date: 4 September 1957.
She was met by an angry mob and fled in tears. If I recall correctly, President Eisenhower had to override the governor of Arkansas. I question whether the current president would have done the same, even though we are over 60 years from then. That's sad.
Time to turn the corner.
@ashiitaka saidEisenhower was a giant of history, victorious supreme commander of the Allies in WW2 and President of the USA. We don't have Presidents with that level of power and respect today.

@athousandyoung saidWell, to be fair to others, the lack of a World War leaves less opportunity for glory. But I concur - certainly one of the better presidents.

I don't dislike his predecessor either, although he was responsible for some controversial decisions.
just these comments.
The US was great right up to this point. Not perfect, but much better than America today in a plethora of ways,
One of our last honest presidents, Dwight Eisenhauer, was America's only 5-star general and won the presidency on sheer popularity from his great WWII campaign in the European theatre. And it was Dwight who later warned the people of America of the rise of the Military Industrial Complex, which coincided with America's invasion of the Korean Peninsula and the invention of the CIA,
IMO, America has never been the same. or even close.
